Know What A Panic Attack Is
Many panic attack sufferers do not actually understand what is really going on in their bodies (and minds) when they have an attack. They know of the symptoms but they do not understand why the body is producing them. In our bodies, we have something called a sympathetic nervous system. The key to managing and curing anxiety attacks is to break this loop.
Coping With Panic Attacks
One way to cope is to accept and acknowledge the panic attack. As you feel them (and even when not), say to yourself that you know it is a panic attack, it will not harm you and it will pass. Say this out loud if you require to as such affirmations are stronger when done so.
Also be more assertive. There is a large body of evidence which shows that playing a passive role in life without objecting or disagreeing with anything is seen with a higher incidence of panic attacks.
Live in the present. Many sufferers of panic attacks worry "what if" and about the future. Distract yourself if necessary and concentrate more on the present - what you can do now.
With time, experience will allow you to deal greater with panic attacks. However, curing them altogether is preferable to simply coping with them.
Behavioral Therapy
Even more successful than drugs, behavioral therapy has been show to be highly effective in treating panic attacks. The key idea is that you can train yourself to modify your thought processes to break the anxiety loop early.
If you do this correctly then you don't need to rely on always repeating coping statements. Effectively, you will never need the coping statements because the anxiety about having panic attacks will disappear.
